SIGNED AMERICAN BRILLIANT PERIOD TUTHILL "PRIMROSE & SWIRL" CUT GLASS BOWL. This beautiful pattern was named "Primrose & Swirl" or "Primrose & Swirled Geometric".It was likely made between 1910 and 1916 during the latter part of the American Brilliant Period. A slightly smaller version of this bowl is pictured on page 151 in the book. The Rich Cut Glass of Charles Guernsey Tuthill. It's a wonderful example of Tuthill's prowess at combining geometric designs with realistic cuttings. The design of this elegant cut glass bowl features swirls of hobstars and crosshatched blocks alternating with panels of primrose flowers, starting from just a stem, to leaves, to buds, to the full flower. The bowl measures approximately 9" wide and 3 7/8" tall. The blank is thick and heavy (about 7/16). The inside bottom surface has Tuthill's acid etched script mark (see last photo). This piece is guaranteed to be an original Tuthill bowl. It glows a pale green-yellow color under the black light.
Condition of this Tuthill Primrose & Swirl bowl is EXCELLENT with no chips or cracks. I don't see any nicks on the teeth. The glass is clear with no cloudiness or residue. The exterior pattern and underside of the base shows very minor wear. This bowl has obviously been well cared for and I doubt you will find a nicer example. It looks fantastic and would make a wonderful addition to any ABP cut glass collection.
